Miguel Nicolelis receives the National Institute of Health’s most prestigious scientific award: the 2010 Director’s Pioneer Award

Miguel Nicolelis is the first Brazilian scientist to be awarded with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s Pioneer Award. Created in 2004, this is the most prestigious scientific award given by the US government, via NIH, to biomedical researchers as recognition for their innovative approaches and Nicolelis is one of the 81 scientists to receive this honor since then.
Nicolelis plans to use the $2.5 million award to expand his work into the development of brain-machine interfaces.

Miguel Nicolelis, became one of four Brazilian scientists elected to the French Academy of Sciences. Founded in 1666, the French Academy of Sciences is one of the five academies comprising the Institut de France and has among its members, the most important scientists and researchers in the world, elected by academic groups. The ceremony of presentation of 18 new foreign members took place at the Institute of France, on 15 June 2010.
